What is chiropractic?According to the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC) - chiropractic is defined as "a health profession concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, and the effects of these disorders on the function of the nervous system and general health. There is an emphasis on manual treatments including spinal adjustment and other joint and soft-tissue manipulation."

Do you accept medical aid?Yes, depending on which medical aid you are with. You are welcome to send us your details so we can confirm benefits for you. If your medical aid doesn't cover your appointments, then the account needs to be settled by you. You will be given an invoice for payment.

Do I need a referral?Some medical aid plans may require you to see a GP prior to seeing a chiropractor. However, most plans and private patients are able to schedule an appointment directly.

What should I wear to my consultation?Come in whatever you'd like to wear but it is advisable to wear something comfy and stretchy!

How many treatments will I need?Each condition, and each patient, are unique. Some patients respond faster than others. After a careful and accurate assessment, your chiropractor should tell you approximately how long this condition will last and how many treatments are suggested.

Why do adjustments cause a popping sound?A chiropractic adjustment causes the joints, either in the spine or most other joints of the body, to release a gas bubble. This is the noise you hear, owing to the change of internal joint pressure. Adjustments are relieving and help reduce musculoskeletal symptoms.

How are chiropractors trained and educated?The are many tertiary education institutions all over the world that offer chiropractic. Here, in South Africa, chiropractic can be studied at the University of Johannesburg or the Durban University of Technology. The 6 year course includes a 4 year undergraduate degree and a 2 year masters degree. Subjects include anatomy, physiology, chiropractic practice, biomechanics, diagnostics and clinical chiropractic. During their masters, chiropractors are required to write a dissertation. Finally, an intensive internship program is completed which requires observations of many health care professionals, community service and additional educational courses. Dr Lauren graduated with a Master's in Health Sciences: Chiropractic from the University of Johannesburg.

Do I need to be a member of the Killarney Country Club to make an appointment?No! The Chiro Lab is open and available to all patients needing appointments.

Where can I park at the Gym on 5th?Once entering the Killarney Country Club, turn left and drive all the way to the end (past the paddle and bowls lawns until you see the tennis courts). You may make use of any of the free parking spaces. We are located within the gym. If you have any questions - please feel free to contact me on 073 160 6024.

Where can I park at the Woodmead practice?We are located inside the Allhart Office Park. Enter the office park, turn right. Park in any of the available parkings that you see in front of you. Enter the building through the glass doors. We are in the offices on the left.

What times are your doctors available?Dr. Lauren is available Monday to Thursday from 7AM to 6PM, and on Fridays from 7AM to 2PM. Dr. Afonso is available on Friday from 2PM to 5PM, and on Saturdays from 8AM to 1PM.
