Movement is Medicine

Chiropractic care helps the body heal itself and believes that proper function of the musculoskeletal system (muscles, joints, tendons, ligaments) is essential for overall health. One of the key concepts within chiropractic care is that "movement is medicine." This means that regular physical activity and movement are essential for sustaining good well-being and avoiding injury.

Gone are the days of traditional “bed rest” - the human body is designed to move. Our muscles, bones, and joints are all designed to work together in a synchronised manner to enable us to perform a wide range of activities, actions, and movements. When we don't move enough, our bodies can become stiff, weak, and therefore prone to injury.

Regular physical activity and movement have many benefits for our health. It can help to improve our cardiovascular health, strengthen our muscles and bones, reduce our risk of chronic diseases, improve our mental health and welfare. Movement is also essential for upholding good posture and preventing back and neck pain.

Chiropractors can help patients to incorporate movement into their daily lives in a safe and effective way. Chiropractic care often involves manual therapy techniques to improve joint mobility and reduce pain, as well as therapeutic stretching programs to improve and maintain strength, flexibility, and range of motion.

Therapeutic stretching programs can be tailored to the specific needs of each patient. For example, someone who spends a lot of time sitting at a desk may need stretches to improve their posture and reduce their risk of developing back pain. Someone who plays a sport may need stretches to improve their agility, balance, and coordination.

Chiropractors can also provide advice on how to incorporate more movement into daily life. This may involve simple changes like taking regular breaks from sitting, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, or walking or cycling to work instead of driving.

In summary, movement is essential for maintaining good health and preventing injury – hence the saying “movement is medicine”. Chiropractors can help patients to incorporate movement into their daily lives in a safe and effective way. By making movement a priority, we can all enjoy the many advantages of a healthy, active lifestyle.
